EFFECTS OF COVID-19 ON BUSINESSES, EDUCATION AND ECONOMY OF NIGERIA

Unforseen situations come up, and most times, they are said to be inevitable. Life would actually not go the exact way you want it to go and that exactly makes it LIFE. In this case, the unforeseen occurrence that has come over the world at large is the deadly Coronavirus disease, popularly referred to ad COVID-19. Coronavirus disease is an infectious disease caused by a newly discovered coronavirus, it is a deadly disease which has killed thousands of people globally with millions infected, and of course, some infected persons have recovered. Covid-19 has resulted in people losing their jobs, closure of essential places such as educational institutions and worship centres, stagnancy in some aspects of people’s lives and has made economies melt down to the barest minimum. Speaking of Nigeria as one of the countries this disease has dominated; it has caused a lot of chaos in people’s lives, businesses, education and the likes of it.

Thus, in the foregoing, the effects of Covid-19 on businesses, education and economy of Nigeria will be discussed.

1) Businesses in Nigeria have experienced a lot of devastation. This pandemic has caused travel bans to other countries where goods can no longer be imported into and exported out of the country, resulting in drastic drop of business owners net worth and even unemployment for some. Interstate travels have also been banned and this has resulted in increase of prices of consumables, such as foodstuffs, home accessories and the likes of it. Private workers as well have lost their jobs, some do not get paid and this leaves them questioning their survival, with some of these people turning to criminals just to get a means of livelihood. Some of the business owners abroad have had to leave their businesses and come home leaving their business in the fate of whatsoever comes to fore. These are just few of what covid-19 has caused on businesses in Nigeria.

2) Education in Nigeria due to this pandemic, has encountered stagnancy in every aspect. Learning has come to a stop where educational institutions are closed down in order for students not to contact this disease in their various schools.  Though, Nigerian government has come up with different remote learning aids, tools such as Zoom, Google classroom, Media coaching (Television and Radio stations) and so on are used to aid learning, but, the fact remains that, not all students have devices to enjoy this opportunity. We all can imagine where months of stagnancy in Nigeria Education would have caused in pupils lives.

3) Due to the lockdown spree in Nigeria, businesses, companies and firms, Governmental organizations and Non-Governmental organizations to mention a few has shutdown which has caused a great deal in the economy of Nigeria. The collapse in government revenue, following the fall in oil prices, mitigating healthy emergencies and subsequent economic ramifications is an unprecedented challenge for Nigeria policymakers. If people do not however,  observe and implement fully the social distancing measures, the high burden of the infectious disease is likely to burden on the already underfunded economy of Nigeria.

However, donations from the corporate organizations and Nigeria allies abroad have kept Nigeria going, the health sectors are not shutdown and these donations have reportedly been saving Nigeria’s health sectors. This also has revealed few things about health institutions in Nigeria where there are supposed to be availability of  medical facilities such as ventilators amongst others, but our leaders have preferred being flown out to other countries to treat their illnesses, but, now, with the borders shut, the elites must now confront using their country’s healthcare facilities in battling Covid-19.
